Poll Finds Americans Dedicate Majority of Internet Time to Social Media

It’s no surprise that social media’s popularity has exploded, but a recent Nielsen poll shows just how much it’s taken over Americans’ time spent on the Internet.

Americans spend more than a third of their time online (36 percent) communicating across social networks, blogs, e-mail and instant messaging. Nearly a quarter of their time is dedicated to just social media and blogs, up from almost 16% last year, which is a 43% increase over just one year ago.

Here is what the survey found to be the top 10 activities Americans do online:

1. Social Networks
2. Online Games
3. E-mail
4. Portals
5. Instant Messaging
6. Videos/Movies
7. Search
8. Software Manufacturers
9. Multi-category Entertainment
10. Classifieds/Auctions

So while many question whether social media are just a passing fad, data demonstrates that this is where the people—your stakeholders and potential customers—are.
